Thoughts on Marriage, on My 17th Wedding Anniversary

I read somewhere that there are two parts to marriage - being married and staying married.

Being married is the fun part. It’s holidays and date nights, inside jokes and baby’s first steps…or in our case, baby’s first F word. It’s the part where you’re both laughing as cake is shoved in your face on your wedding day.

Staying married is the hard part. It’s unloading the dishwasher and getting up with a sick kid in the middle of the night, arguments over stupid (or not so stupid) things and reminiscing about when you actually used to go out on weekend nights. It’s picking frosting out of your nose.

When two people choose to get married, I think there’s an expectation that every day will be sunshine and rainbows. But that’s just not how life is. Sometimes it’s rainy with a high of 39.

Marriage is putting on your raincoats and going outside together, regardless of the weather conditions.
